The Seattle Mariners could soon have a regional adversary as the Portland Diamond Project (PDP) has unveiled renderings for a proposed Major League Baseball stadium in Portland's South Waterfront district. The envisioned 32,000-seat stadium, featuring a retractable roof, is set to be a year-round civic asset.

The proposed site, Zidell Yards, is a 33-acre former shipyard located between Tillikum Crossing and the Ross Island Bridge, overlooking the Willamette River. The PDP, led by founder and president Craig Cheek, has been actively pursuing an MLB franchise for Portland since 2017. The group has reached an agreement to purchase the land, marking a significant step toward bringing professional baseball to the city.

During a recent legislative committee meeting, Cheek expressed optimism about the project's progress, stating, "We believe the state’s support is critical for this project’s success." The PDP aims to break ground on the new stadium around 2027, with construction costs estimated to reach up to $2 billion.

The introduction of an MLB team in Portland would establish a natural rivalry with the Seattle Mariners, potentially igniting a new chapter in Pacific Northwest sports. Fans from both cities could look forward to regional matchups that would enhance the baseball experience in the area.

While no official MLB expansion has been announced, Portland's proactive approach and detailed stadium plans position the city as a strong candidate for a future franchise. As developments unfold, Mariners fans should stay tuned for updates on this potential neighboring team.
