In a significant move to bolster their offense, the Seattle Seahawks have signed quarterback Sam Darnold to a three-year, $100.5 million contract, with $55 million guaranteed.
This acquisition comes on the heels of trading former starting quarterback Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders. Darnold, who earned Pro Bowl honors in 2024, led the Minnesota Vikings to a 14-3 record last season, throwing for 4,319 yards and 35 touchdowns.
At his introductory press conference, Darnold expressed enthusiasm about joining the Seahawks, stating, "I'm so excited to finally have those 12s on my side this time... I think we have an opportunity to do something very, very special here."
Head coach Mike Macdonald highlighted Darnold's leadership and resilience, noting, "First of all, he's just a tremendous human being. A great leader... Just tough as nails from my opinion."
Darnold's familiarity with offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, from their time together with the 49ers in 2023, is expected to facilitate a smooth transition into Seattle's offensive system.Reflecting on his career resurgence, Darnold credited insights gained from former teammate Brock Purdy during their tenure with the 49ers. This experience led to a transformative season in 2024, where Darnold reduced turnovers and improved performance by adopting a facilitator role and relying on team playmakers.
The Seahawks' decision to sign Darnold underscores their commitment to strengthening the quarterback position and building on last season's 10-win performance. With Darnold at the helm, Seattle aims to make a deep postseason run and capitalize on the potential for "something very, very special" in the upcoming season.
